Thinking of Becoming a Manager

Accredited training for any aspiring manager

This programme has been designed to meet the needs of anyone who is thinking about becoming a manager, during the programme participants will have a chance to learn some core management skills, to undertake a personal SWOT analysis and formulate a personal development plan to utilise any opportunities to develop management skills and experience.  They will also learn about the recruitment process and how to present themselves positively.  Participants will have the opportunity to undertake assessment for the Award in Personal Development as a Manager and Leader (5001) a Chartered Management Institute level 5 Award in the Certificate in Management and Leadership (6 credits).  This is a nationally recognised award and should the participant become a manager this will give them 6 credits towards the full certificate (13 credits) which they may be able to complete in house or at a local college.

We also offer shorter non-accredited Aspiring Managers courses.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme participants will:

  • Have an overview of the skills and theory of management practice
  • Will have developed their skills and knowledge about the support and development of staff
  • Will have had a chance to identify whether they actually wish to become a manager
  • Have identified their own skills and knowledge
  • Have identified skills and knowledge gaps and developed a development plan to close the gap
  • Will be equipped for the recruitment process for a management job.

Day One: What do managers do?

  •  An introduction to the skills and knowledge needed to manage people in the probation service.

Day Two: What do I know, what do I need to learn?

  • An overview of the skills needed to be a manager part 2, Supporting and developing staff
  • Undertaking a personal SWOT analysis
  • Developing a personal development plan.

During this day participants will be introduced to coaching skills as a positive method of supervising and supporting staff, they will then practice these skills to help each other with the SWOT analysis and the development plan.

Day Three:

Participants will attend half a day (6 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon) and work together with the support of the trainer to prepare a short presentation on the subject of their development plan to be presented on day three as if to an interview panel.  They will be given guidance about how to do this.  This will form part of the guided learning hours and underpin the assessment.

Day Four:

  • Preparing to apply for a management job
  • An introduction to the recruitment and selection process
  • writing the application to the person specification
  • Doing a presentation
  • What next? Making sure I keep my development live.

Participants will also have to complete an assignment for assessment in order to receive the CMI Award.

The training will be lively and engaging and will be supported by comprehensive materials.
