An integrated approach to working with diversity
The Midlands Training Consortium is committed to an effective, inclusive and imaginative approach to working with diversity and anti-discriminatory probation practice. One of our key aims is to develop and implement the integration of diversity into learning and development delivery to ensure the best possible learning opportunities for all staff.
Our starting point is that a positive approach to working with diversity and a commitment to anti-discriminatory practice are central to the role of all Probation staff. This is in line with the stated NOMS values of:
- incorporating equality and diversity in all we do
- valuing and empowering staff, and working collaboratively with others
- embracing change and innovation.
The Consortium works closely with the Midlands Trusts and De Montfort University in order to promote the development of Diversity and Anti-Discriminatory Practice on the Learning and Development programmes run by the Midlands Consortium.
The key objectives are based around:
- Developing a curriculum and resources around Diversity and Anti-Discriminatory Practice for L&D programmes.
- Contributing to the evaluation of teaching input and practice development (linked to L & D programmes) from a Diversity perspective.
- Offering consultation on relevant issues to L&D programmes.
- Encouraging the integration of theory and practice across L&D programmes.
The Consortium has been instrumental in developing new ways of integrating diversity knowledge into practice and will continue to do so. A new development will be an e-learning website which will be available later in the year. Further details will be published on this website.
In addition the Consortium has been able to support staff who manage the practice aspects of L&D programmes (such as the current Honours Degree and Graduate Diploma pathways within the new probation qualifications framework). Diversity Conferences have been organised covering topics such as Disability and Hate Crime and more recently Neurodiversity and Probation Practice.
The Consortium has developed its own Single Equality Scheme to ensure that its processes, procedures and training materials meet the needs of both the diverse workforce and the diversity knowledge and skills required to work effectively with all offenders. the policy and Action Plan are available elsewhere on this website
